For those who didn’t know, Nicki Minaj is a rapper and a singer-songwriter.
She was born in 1982 in Saint James, Trinidad & Tobago, of Indian and Afro-Trinidadian parents, and her given name was actually Onika Tanya Maraj.
As a child, she moved to the Queens borough of New York City, where she graduated in 2003, before releasing her first mix tape, Playtime Is Over, in 2007.
Her big break came in 2009 when she was discovered by a fellow rapper, Lil Wayne, and signed a deal to Young Money Entertainment with distribution from Universal Motown.
It wasn’t until 2010 that Nicki Minaj released her first solo album, Pink Friday.
This was a huge commercial success for her, reaching the top of the US Billboard 200 and going platinum after just one month.
She also became the first artist ever to have seven singles in the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time.
In 2011, she will be one of the opening acts for Britney Spears’ Femme Fatale Tour.
